Job Description

Job Purposes: To manage the daily lab operations by overseeing all aspects of the lab, including but not limited to, research activities, instruments/equipment, lab users and supplies needed to ensure the lab runs smoothly.

Essential Functions and percent of time:
5%-Laboratory Management
  • Remains familiar with the regulatory requirements specific to the laboratory and ensures all users are in- compliance with those standards.
  • Reviews research protocols to stay abreast of research projects occurring in the lab at any given time.
  • Updates and maintains laboratory certifications.
  • Supervises the research activities of laboratory personnel.
10%-Laboratory Operation
  • Oversees laboratory safety and ensures that the laboratory remains in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations. In cases where non-compliance is found, documents the instances as well as how they were abated.
  • Communicates and enforces laboratory safety rules to researchers working in the lab.
    Ensures all reagents and supplies are available when needed.
  • Manages and updates laboratory inventories.
5%-Laboratory Training
  • Ensures laboratory users have been trained on the correct use of the laboratory equipment.
  • Schedules safety training for new laboratory users and re-training for laboratory users who are in need of refresher training to include but not be limited to: equipment training, safety training and/or lab safety plan reviews and ensure the training has been documented.
5% Laboratory Maintenance/Housekeeping
  • Ensures that the laboratory is cleaned/sanitized and kept in an orderly manner.
  • Ensures all instrumentations/equipment is functioning properly to include but not limited to eyewash/safety showers and when instruments/equipment is found to be in need of maintenance/repair, contacts the Equipment Engineer to have it repaired.
75% Research Activities
  • Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of research procedures.
  • Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.
  • Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
  • Assists laboratory personnel with research activities.
