Job Description

OhioMeansJobs|Cleveland-Cuyahoga County is sourcing an Assistant Coach for a Technology Educational Company in Downtown Cleveland. 

Position Summary

The Assistant Coach assists program Head Coaches with teaching, coaching, and mentoring of Company students. This is a 12-month, renewable 1099 contract position with a pay range of $20.00-$26.00 per hour based on experience. Contract renewable upon completion.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Knows and upholds Company value of Equity, Working with Your Hands, Self-confidence, Authenticity, and Community.
  2. Assists program Head Coaches with teaching, coaching, and mentoring of Company students. Helps with classroom management. Writes vocabulary on board while Head Coach instructs.
  3. Administers pre- and post-course assessments.
  4. Mentors and coaches students and helps them problem solve. Answers student questions and facilitates problem solving and self-discovery. Assists student with build of motorcycle or engine models.
  5. Checks attendance. Completes Coach's log of daily teaching activity outcomes and progress.
  6. Prepare supplies and materials for program. Sets up and cleans up of classroom.
  7. Collects t-shirt sizes and distributes materials for students to keep.
  8. Takes photos for social media posts.
  9. Communicates with school relationship manager prior to beginning of program. Updates program calendar based on school schedule.
  10. Checks final assembly of engines and motorcycles. Prepares motorcycles and engines for next program.
  11. Compiles assessment data into report form so that Company and school relationship manager can assess program effectiveness.

Technical Expertise

  1. Experience teaching or coaching young people between the ages of 13 and 18 is preferred.
  2. Experience using mechanical or woodworking hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, saws, and pliers is required.
  3. Experience using mechanical or woodworking power tools such as compressors, drills, saws, and cutters is required.
  4. Experience using basic manufacturing or engineering mathematics is required.
  5. Experience reading and using manuals, instructions, and diagrams is required.
  6. Experience with small engine or motorcycle engine mechanics is preferred.
  7. Experience operating motorcycles is preferred.
  8. Proficiency in Google Workspace (docs, sheets, drive, etc.) or similar software is required. Experience with relevant software and design tools is preferred.

Education and Experience

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certifications or licensure: Current Ohio teaching license is preferred.
  • Years of relevant experience: 5 to 7 years is preferred.
  • Years of experience supervising: None.

Employment Contingencies

  • Must be able to pass the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation [BCI] and FBI background checks is required.
  • Must be able to complete trauma-informed care training is required.
  • Must be able to complete Virtus training for teaching in Diocese of Cleveland schools is required.
  • Drivers’ license and ability to maintain a driving record that is satisfactory to the organization’s liability insurance carrier is required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • The work environment involves the everyday risks or discomforts of working in a shop or school environment, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with hand and power tools, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of all fire and safety regulations.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • The work environment has eye hazards and safety glasses are required.
  • This position is performed on-site at schools, community centers, and other public spaces as well as within Company facilities.
  • Work hours are generally Mondays to Saturday from 11.00a to 6.00p. Work schedule will vary based on program.
  • Frequent local travel by automobile and a valid State of Ohio drivers’ license is required.
  • Lift objects of at least 40 pounds and carry them short distances [20 feet or less].
