Job Description

This position on the Performance Coatings Group Commercialization Engineering team is located at the Sherwin-Williams R&D/ Production site in Grove City, OH, and is accountable for new product scale-up, process optimization, process troubleshooting, and site-to-site product transfers. The position will be focused on supporting the General Industrial and Protective & Marine powder business units with responsibilities including making lab batches, defining process conditions, supporting new product test batches, and leveraging knowledge of both operations and technical staff. In this position, the Associate R&D Engineer will lead individual projects and use their engineering expertise to ensure successful new product commercialization and efficient process design.

Technical


Employ engineering principles to ensure successful scale-up and commercialization of new products.
Develop engineering-based correlations between laboratory and production equipment.
Optimize processes, equipment, and formulas to produce quality industrial coatings.
Perform a variety of laboratory tasks using general instruments and advanced lab equipment.
Troubleshoot production and quality issues by diagnosing and determining solutions.
Use statistical techniques to design experiments and interpret experimental and production data.
Support root cause analyses to identify and resolve quality issues at production plants.

Project Management


Develop work plans and timelines for individual projects.
Collaborate with engineers, chemists, and operations personnel on projects.
Identify opportunities and implement recommendations for continuous improvement.
Develop standardized processes for industrial coating commercialization and production.

Communication


Document laboratory and production results and observations.
Communicate with team members and R&D and production site personnel.
Write technical reports of lab results and production observations and present findings to team members.

Safety and Quality


Review new product formulas to ensure processing robustness and adherence to quality standards.
Ensure safety, housekeeping, and ISO practices are followed.
Maintain certification on safety and quality standards.
Promote safe work practices and seek to reduce safety and quality risks.

Other duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS


Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
3.0 GPA or higher

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering
Previous internship or co-op experience at Sherwin-Williams
Familiarity with laboratory and manufacturing practices
Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances.
Ability to effectively interact and build relationships with co-workers of varying levels of technical expertise.
High level of initiative and leadership ability

Travel Requirements: 10%
